Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage, grated or chopped
  • 1 medium head lettuce, torn in pieces
  • 3 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cup celery, chopped fine
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion (optional)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 cup mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Combine the grated or chopped cabbage, torn lettuce, diced tomatoes, finely chopped celery, and chopped onion (if using) in a salad bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, salt, pepper, vinegar, and mayonnaise until smooth.
  3. Just before serving, pour the dressing over the vegetables and toss well to coat.
  4. Do not add the dressing ahead of time to keep the vegetables crisp.
