Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 3/4 cup sweet milk

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients together: flour, sugar, salt, baking powder.
  2. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Dissolve the yeast in 1 tablespoon warm water and let it activate.
  4. Combine all liquids: buttermilk, sweet milk, and the dissolved yeast, then mix thoroughly into the dry ingredients.
  5. Turn out the dough onto a floured board.
  6. Roll the dough thin.
  7. Cut into rounds.
  8. Stack the rounds one on another.
  9. Brush the top and layers with melted butter.
  10. Let rise for about 2 hours before baking.
  11. Bake in a 400°F oven for 12 to 14 minutes, watching closely.
