Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3/4 cup scalded milk
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 beaten eggs
  • 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in 1/4 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon sugar.
  2. Combine hot milk, shortening, and salt; cool to lukewarm.
  3. Add 1 cup flour, then add yeast mixture and beaten eggs.
  4. Beat well until smooth.
  5. Stir in remaining flour and knead lightly for 5 to 8 minutes.
  6. Cover the dough and let rise until doubled in size.
  7. Divide the dough into thirds.
  8. Roll each portion into a 9-inch circle.
  9. Cut each circle like a pie into wedges.
  10. Roll each wedge from the big end to the point, placing point down on a greased cookie sheet.
  11. Curve each roll slightly to form a crescent shape.
  12. Brush the rolls with melted butter.
  13. Beat an egg with a little water and brush on the rolls.
  14. Sprinkle poppy seed on top.
  15. Cover and let rise until light.
  16. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
