- Soften yeast in 1/4 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon sugar.
- Combine hot milk, shortening, and salt; cool to lukewarm.
- Add 1 cup flour, then add yeast mixture and beaten eggs.
- Beat well until smooth.
- Stir in remaining flour and knead lightly for 5 to 8 minutes.
- Cover the dough and let rise until doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into thirds.
- Roll each portion into a 9-inch circle.
- Cut each circle like a pie into wedges.
- Roll each wedge from the big end to the point, placing point down on a greased cookie sheet.
- Curve each roll slightly to form a crescent shape.
- Brush the rolls with melted butter.
- Beat an egg with a little water and brush on the rolls.
- Sprinkle poppy seed on top.
- Cover and let rise until light.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 to 12 minutes.
