Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 6 1/2 to 7 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a mixing bowl; add sugar and about half of the flour.
  2. Beat thoroughly for 2 minutes.
  3. Add eggs and shortening; gradually beat in the remaining flour until smooth.
  4. Cover with a damp cloth and place in the refrigerator.
  5. Punch down the dough occasionally.
  6. About 2 hours before baking, cut off the needed amount of dough.
  7. Return the remaining dough to the refrigerator.
  8. Shape the dough into rolls and brush tops with butter.
  9. Let the rolls rise until light.
  10. Bake at 350°F until brown.
