Ingredients

  • 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 cups unsifted flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 (1 lb 6 oz) can cherry pie filling
  • confectioners sugar frosting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Combine milk, water, and margarine in a saucepan.
  3. Heat over low heat until liquids are very warm (120° to 130°F).
  4. Add the warm liquids to the dry ingredients. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.
  5. Add eggs and 1/2 cup of flour; beat on high speed for 2 minutes.
  6. Add more flour gradually to make a stiff batter.
  7. Cover the bowl tightly with aluminum foil and chill for 2 hours or overnight.
  8. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board.
  9. Divide the dough into 18 equal pieces and roll each into a 15-inch rope.
  10. Wind each rope to form a coil.
  11. Place on a greased baking sheet 2 inches apart.
  12. Cover and let rise in the oven until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  13. Make a 1-inch hole in the center of each coil.
  14. Fill the hole with cherry pie filling.
  15. Bake at 400°F for 12 to 15 minutes.
  16. Cool on a wire rack and frost when cooled.
