Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons shortening
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Heat milk over medium heat until a film forms on the surface.
  2. Melt shortening in the warm milk.
  3. Let the milk mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Sprinkle dry yeast over warm water in a large bowl.
  5. Stir until the yeast is dissolved.
  6. Add sugar, salt, shortening, and the milk mixture to the yeast.
  7. Mix well to combine.
  8. Add 3 cups of flour to the mixture.
  9. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.
  10. Gradually add the remaining flour and mix well.
  11. Cover the bowl with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
  12. Grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  13. Using a wooden spoon, beat the dough vigorously for 25 strokes.
  14. Pour the dough into the prepared pan.
  15. Cover with a towel and let rise until the dough reaches the top of the pan, about 30 minutes.
  16. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 40 to 50 minutes until the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  17. Remove from the pan and let cool.
