Tips & Substitutions

For best results, make sure your water is lukewarm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. If you don’t have lard, unsalted butter or vegetable shortening can be used as a substitute. Adding a bit of garlic powder or herbs can elevate the flavor of the buns. Ensure to knead the dough thoroughly for a good rise.

Serving Suggestions

These delightful buns are perfect for serving alongside soups or stews, such as Dick'S Onion Bread. They also make a great base for sliders or can be enjoyed with butter and jam. For a sweet treat, pair them with Yummy Caramel Nut Pie for dessert.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover buns in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. To keep them fresh longer, you can freeze them in a freezer-safe bag for up to a month. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes, or until warm, to restore their soft texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these buns in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance and refrigerate it. After kneading, cover it tightly and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, allow the dough to come to room temperature and complete the rising process before shaping and baking.

What can I do if my dough doesn't rise?

If your dough doesn't rise, it may be due to inactive yeast. Ensure your yeast is fresh and active by proofing it in lukewarm water with sugar before adding it to the mixture. Also, check that your rising environment is warm enough, as cooler temperatures can slow down yeast activity.

Can I add fillings to these buns?

Absolutely! You can fill these buns with cheese, herbs, or even sweet fillings like cinnamon sugar or fruit preserves before shaping them. Just be careful not to overfill, as this can prevent them from rising properly.
