Skillet Onions

Sweet and savory skillet onions with caramelized brown sugar and margarine, perfect as a side dish for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick margarine
  • 2 onions (Bermuda, Vidalia, etc.), peeled and cut into 3 thick slices
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

Instructions

  1. Melt margarine in an iron frypan.
  2. Place onion slices in a single layer in the pan.
  3. Sprinkle with about 2 tablespoons of brown sugar.
  4. Cover and cook over low heat for 10 minutes.
  5. Turn the onions and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.
  6. Cook uncovered for 5 minutes.
  7. Uncover and cook, basting with the margarine-sugar mixture, for 5 minutes longer or until tender.
