Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda, added to milk

Instructions

  1. Mix together like pie crust the flour, salt, sugar and shortening.
  2. Reserve 1 cup of this mixture and add 1 teaspoon cinnamon to it.
  3. To the rest of the mixture, add egg, baking powder, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and buttermilk.
  4. Mix well and put in 9 x 13 pan.
  5. Sprinkle cup of reserved mixture over top. Bake at 375° for 20 to 25 minutes.
