Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp salt
  • 4 c flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1 1/2 cups of warm water.
  2. Add sugar and salt to the yeast mixture.
  3. Add flour and mix thoroughly to form a dough.
  4. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  5. Roll the dough into a circle and divide into 8 equal pieces.
  6. Roll each piece into a 12 to 15-inch long, pencil-thin strand and shape into pretzels.
  7. Place foil on a cookie sheet, shiny side up.
  8. Beat 1 egg yolk with 1 tablespoon water and baste onto the pretzels.
  9. Sprinkle pretzels with salt.
  10. Bake in a hot oven at 425°F (220°C) for 12 to 15 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the dough. If you don't have dry yeast, you can substitute with fresh yeast, using about three times the amount. To achieve a deeper brown color on the pretzels, try boiling them briefly in a baking soda solution before baking. Ensure your water is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these soft Dutch pretzels warm, accompanied by mustard or cheese sauce for dipping. They pair beautifully with a Lavender Pineapple Drink or can be enjoyed alongside a Pea, Pickle And Peanut Salad for a refreshing contrast. These pretzels make a great snack for gatherings or game days.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes until warm. For a crispier texture, you can also toast them in a skillet for a couple of minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?

Yes, you can substitute whole wheat flour, but the pretzels may turn out denser. To achieve a lighter texture, consider mixing half whole wheat flour with half all-purpose flour.

How can I make these pretzels vegan?

To make vegan pretzels, simply omit the egg yolk used for basting. You can use a plant-based milk for brushing instead, or skip the basting altogether, as the pretzels will still be delicious without it.

What can I do if my dough is too sticky?

If your dough feels too sticky, gradually add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until it reaches a manageable consistency. Kneading it on a floured surface can also help to incorporate the flour evenly.
