Ingredients

  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 6 egg whites
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Beat egg whites until foamy and gradually add 1/2 cup sugar.
  3. Continue beating until meringue forms stiff peaks.
  4. Set aside.
  5. Cream shortening and gradually add 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition.
  7. Add vanilla and almond extracts.
  8. Gently fold in beaten egg whites until fully incorporated.
  9. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 to 25 minutes, in 3 layers.
