Ingredients

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Cook raisins in water for 5 minutes.
  2. Drain raisins and save 1 cup of the liquid.
  3. Add soda and shortening to the raisin liquid.
  4. Sift together all dry ingredients: flour, ground cloves, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add raisins and the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
  6. Spread the dough thinly in 2 greased oblong pans.
  7. Bake at 350°F for approximately 12 minutes.
  8. While hot, ice with thin powdered sugar icing.
  9. Cut into bars while warm.
