Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 apples
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • cinnamon
  • red food coloring
  • red hots (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel apples and cut into chunks or thick slices. To prevent darkening, place sliced apples in a bowl of saltwater if desired.
  2. Place sugar, water, and several red hots in a heavy saucepan; stir well and simmer.
  3. Add a generous sprinkle of cinnamon and enough red food coloring to make the syrup bright red.
  4. Add part of the drained apples and cook until tender.
  5. Remove cooked apples and continue cooking the syrup until thickened.
  6. Pour the thickened syrup over the remaining apples in a casserole or dish.
  7. Chill the dish; the apples keep well in the refrigerator.
