Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup ground nuts

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and shortening until fluffy.
  2. Add sugar, vanilla, and egg yolk; beat until light.
  3. Stir in sifted dry ingredients and half the nuts; mix well.
  4. Press the dough evenly into a 15 x 10-inch shallow pan.
  5. Brush the top with slightly beaten egg white.
  6. Sprinkle remaining nuts over the top.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes.
  8. Cut into bars while warm.
