Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup squash, sieved
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Bring the milk to a boil, add shortening, brown sugar, salt, and sieved squash. Cool to lukewarm.
  2. Sprinkle dry yeast over warm water; after 5 minutes, add to the milk mixture.
  3. Add 1 cup of flour and beaten egg; beat until smooth.
  4. Add enough flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours or until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and let rise again.
  8. Turn out onto a lightly floured board.
  9. Roll to 1/2 inch thickness.
  10. Cut and shape into rolls. Place on a greased baking sheet and brush with melted butter.
  11. Let the shaped rolls rise for about 1/2 hour.
  12. Bake at 425°F for 20 to 25 minutes.
