Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups potato water
  • 1 cup artificial sweetener
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 package yeast
  • 10 cups unbleached flour

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and margarine in a bowl.
  2. Add mashed potatoes, potato water, sweetener, and beaten eggs; beat well.
  3. Sprinkle with yeast and stir in gently.
  4. Let stand for 1 1/2 hours in a warm place.
  5. Gradually stir in the unbleached flour.
  6. Knead on a floured surface until smooth.
  7. Let rise, covered, in a warm place for 5 to 6 hours or until doubled in bulk.
  8. Roll out on a floured surface to 1/2-inch thickness.
  9. Cut into desired shapes and place on a floured towel.
  10. Let rise in a warm place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until doubled in bulk.
  11. Deep fry in oil heated to 375°F until light brown.
  12. Drain on paper towels.
