Ingredients

  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 yeast cake or 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • plain flour

Instructions

  1. Let milk, sugar, and shortening come almost to a boil.
  2. Allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm.
  3. Add yeast to lukewarm water and let it activate.
  4. When the milk mixture is warm, add the yeast mixture.
  5. Add enough flour to make a batter like cake batter.
  6. Set aside for 2 hours to let the batter rise.
  7. After rising, add salt, baking powder, baking soda, and enough flour to make a handleable dough.
  8. Divide the dough into rolls and place in a large bowl.
  9. Refrigerate or let the rolls rise for 2 hours before baking.
  10. Bake at 450° to 475° until done.
