Tips & Substitutions

For best results, ensure your mixing bowl is completely clean and free of grease, as any fat can prevent egg whites from achieving stiff peaks. If you don’t have walnuts, you can substitute with pecans or almonds. Consider using a stand mixer for ease, and if you're looking for a festive touch, add food coloring after mixing for vibrant meringues.

Serving Suggestions

These Super Meringue Cookies make a delightful treat on their own but pair beautifully with a cup of coffee or tea. They can also be served alongside fresh fruit or ice cream for a whimsical dessert. For added enjoyment, use them as a topping for a slice of Gram Farleigh'S Tapioca Pudding or a light mousse.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover meringue cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Avoid refrigerating them, as humidity can cause the meringues to become chewy. If they start to lose their crispness, you can re-crisp them in a low oven for a few minutes, but keep a close eye to avoid browning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these meringue cookies without nuts?

Yes, you can easily make these meringue cookies nut-free by omitting the walnuts. They will still be delicious and can be enjoyed by those with nut allergies. You can also add additional chocolate chips or sprinkles for extra flavor and texture.

What should I do if my egg whites don’t whip up properly?

If your egg whites aren’t whipping to stiff peaks, ensure that your mixing bowl is completely clean and dry. Any trace of oil or yolk can hinder the whipping process. Additionally, try using room temperature egg whites, as they whip up more easily than cold ones.

How can I tell when my meringue cookies are done?

Meringue cookies are done when they are dry to the touch and easily lift off the parchment or tinfoil without sticking. They should have a crisp exterior. Since they bake in a turned-off oven, it's essential to leave them for the recommended time to ensure they set properly.
