Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup boiling water or scalded milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 7 1/2 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water and let it sit until frothy.
  2. Melt shortening in boiling water or scalded milk; cool slightly.
  3. In a large bowl, combine melted shortening, eggs, sugar, salt, cold water, and the dissolved yeast.
  4. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  6. Cover and let the dough rise until doubled, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape into rolls.
  8. Place the rolls on a greased baking sheet and let rise again until doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the rolls for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven and serve warm.
