Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 8 to 9 cups flour
  • 2 sticks butter or margarine
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • raisins to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large enamel or porcelain utensil, measure out the lukewarm water and sprinkle the yeast over the top to soften.
  2. Set it aside to allow the yeast to activate.
  3. In a separate large bowl, combine the milk, salt, and sugar.
  4. Add the softened yeast mixture to the milk mixture.
  5. Stir in the eggs and melted butter or margarine.
  6. Gradually add 8 to 9 cups of flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  7. Knead the dough lightly just enough to incorporate all ingredients, then fold in raisins to taste.
  8. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  9. Punch down the dough, shape it into loaves, and place into greased pans.
  10. Allow to rise again until nearly doubled, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  11. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) until golden brown, about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
