Ingredients

  • 1 peck ripe tomatoes
  • 8 onions
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1 pint white vinegar
  • 2 pounds brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the tomatoes and onions.
  2. Add salt to the sliced tomatoes and onions and let stand for several hours.
  3. Drain the mixture and add white vinegar.
  4. Simmer the mixture for 2 to 3 hours until nearly thick.
  5. Add brown sugar and mustard seed, then continue simmering briefly.
  6. Can the chowder while hot.
