- Mix the cake according to the package directions.
- Pour the batter into two large cake pans and bake.
- Allow the cakes to cool completely.
- Slice each cake layer into two even layers, for a total of four layers.
- Mix softened cream cheese, lemon juice, and vanilla frosting to make the frosting mixture.
- Spread some of the frosting on each of the three lower cake layers.
- Reserve a large amount of frosting for the top layer.
- Spread cherry pie filling on each of the lower layers, leaving half a can for the top layer.
- Place the top cake layer and frost it generously with the remaining frosting and cherry filling.
- Allow the cake to set before serving. No sides are decorated; some juice may run down.
