Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 1 c white flour
  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 c warm water
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

  1. Mix yeast, flours, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  2. Add warm water and mix until a ball can be formed.
  3. Sprinkle a table with about 1 tablespoon flour and rub some on your hands.
  4. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Punch and squeeze the dough until it feels like a rubber ball.
  6. Break off walnut-sized pieces from the dough.
  7. Roll each piece into an 8-inch long rod.
  8. Shape each rod into a pretzel form.
  9. Brush the pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt.
  10. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  11. Bake at 450°F (232°C) for about 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
