Ingredients

  • 1 (18 1/2 oz.) package yellow cake mix
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup (6 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate pieces
  • 1 cup flake coconut
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Generously grease and lightly flour the bottom and sides of a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, melted butter, and eggs; stir well by hand until smooth.
  4. In a medium saucepan, melt the semi-sweet chocolate pieces over low heat.
  5. Remove the chocolate from heat and stir in two-thirds of the cake batter, then spread this mixture into the prepared pan.
  6. To the remaining batter, add the coconut, water, and almond extract; mix well.
  7. Spread this coconut mixture over the chocolate layer in the pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool, then cut into bars.
