Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 2/3 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. sifted enriched flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 c. milk

Instructions

  1. Cream butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the beaten egg and vanilla; beat well to combine.
  3. Sift together the enriched flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Roll out the dough to 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  7. Cut out heart-shaped cookies using a cookie cutter.
  8. Place half of the cookies on a lightly greased baking sheet and brush each with water.
  9. Cut smaller heart-shaped centers from the remaining cookies.
  10. Place the smaller heart frames on top of the larger cookies to create a window.
  11. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are golden.
  12. Allow cookies to cool, then fill the center heart space with cherry filling.
