  3. Add egg yolks and blend well, about 10 minutes.
  4. Gradually add flour and mix thoroughly. Fold in chopped walnuts.
  5. Spoon half the batter into a buttered 13 x 9-inch pan and spread evenly.

Tips & Substitutions

Ensure your butter is at room temperature for easier creaming. If you want a nut-free version, you can substitute the chopped walnuts with sunflower seeds or omit them entirely. For a twist, consider adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract or almond extract to the batter for enhanced flavor. If you prefer a different jam, raspberry or apricot can also work well.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these cookies as a delightful afternoon treat with a cup of tea or coffee. They also pair wonderfully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a decadent dessert. For a festive platter, consider including them alongside other sweet treats like Czechoslovakian Jam Bars(Makes 2 Dozen) for a variety of flavors and textures.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container for up to three months. To enjoy, let them thaw at room temperature or warm them briefly in the oven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of jam?

Yes, feel free to substitute strawberry jam with your favorite jam like raspberry or apricot. Each jam will bring its unique flavor, making the cookies versatile and delightful for different tastes.

What can I do if my dough is too sticky?

If your dough feels too sticky, try chilling it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. This will help it firm up and make it easier to spread in the pan. You can also add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until you achieve the desired consistency.

How do I know when the cookies are done baking?

The cookies are done when they are lightly browned on top and edges. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean or with just a few crumbs. Keep an eye on them as baking times can vary slightly depending on your oven.
