Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 5 tablespoons melted vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. To the flour, add the sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa.
  2. Sift together three times, then place the mixture in a small, greased 8-inch square pan.
  3. Make three dents in the top of the mixture.
  4. In the first dent, place 1 teaspoon vinegar; in the second dent, place 1 teaspoon vanilla; in the third dent, place 5 tablespoons melted shortening.
  5. Pour 1 cup of cold water over this and mix well.
  6. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F for 35 minutes.
  7. The recipe may be doubled and baked in a tube pan.
  8. Bake longer than the original time if doubled.
  9. Enjoy a good moist cake, delicious with sprinkled powdered sugar or topped with Cool Whip.
