- Oil a platter with vegetable oil.
- Place sugar, water, vinegar, and butter in a deep saucepan.
- Stir over low heat until the sugar is dissolved.
- Increase the heat slightly and cook the mixture without stirring until a hard ball forms when dropped in cold water.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla.
- Stir only enough to blend the mixture.
- Pour the mixture onto the lightly oiled platter.
- Let it cool until it can be dented when pressed with a finger.
- Gather it into a lump and pull it with the fingertips until it is light and porous.
- Dip your hands frequently into cold water to prevent sticking.
- Roll into long thin strips and cut into 1-inch pieces.
- Place the candy in a tightly covered tin if you want it to become creamy.
