Ingredients

  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups lukewarm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in lukewarm water.
  2. Scald milk, then add shortening, honey, and salt.
  3. Cool mixture to lukewarm temperature.
  4. Add the softened yeast mixture to the milk mixture.
  5. Mix in sifted flour and whole wheat flour, then knead well.
  6. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size.
  7. Punch down the dough and shape into 2 loaves.
  8. Place the loaves in greased loaf pans, cover, and let rise until doubled again.
  9. Bake in a 375°F oven for about 1 hour.
