Ingredients

  • 4 c. flour
  • 1/2 yeast cake
  • lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. oil

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast cake in a small amount of lukewarm water.
  2. Add sugar to the yeast mixture and set aside until bubbly.
  3. Mix flour and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Add the dissolved yeast mixture and oil to the flour mixture.
  5. Gradually add enough water to form a soft, stringy dough, then let it rise for approximately 1 hour.
  6. Take pinches or strips of the risen dough and fry in hot oil until golden brown.
  7. Eat plain, sprinkle with powdered sugar, or dip in cool syrup.
