Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider using smoked paprika instead of regular paprika. You can substitute the pork with beef or use a combination of meats for variation. If sauerkraut is too tangy for your taste, rinse it briefly before adding to the dish. Serve with crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Serving Suggestions

Serve Zegediner Gulasch over egg noodles or with dumplings for a hearty meal. A side of pickles or a mixed green salad can add freshness to the dish. This stew pairs beautifully with crusty bread to soak up the flavorful sauce, making it a complete and satisfying dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of meat for this goulash?

Yes, you can substitute pork with beef or even chicken. Keep in mind that cooking times may vary; beef typically requires a longer cooking time to become tender.

Is it necessary to use apples in this recipe?

The apples add a subtle sweetness that balances the tanginess of the sauerkraut. However, if you prefer, you can omit them or substitute with a bit of sugar or honey to achieve a similar effect.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Absolutely! This goulash tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld together. Prepare it a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just reheat gently before serving.
