Ingredients

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/4 tsp. lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Put flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add shortening and milk, then mix with a mixer until well combined.
  4. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed or by hand, making 300 strokes.
  5. Add unbeaten egg, 1/2 cup milk, lemon juice, vanilla, and almond flavoring.
  6. Beat for 2 minutes with a mixer or by hand, making another 300 strokes.
  7. Pour the batter into two prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
