Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter or shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/3 cup cold water
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 cup cold water

Instructions

  1. Cream together the butter or shortening, sugar, and salt.
  2. Blend 1/2 cup cocoa into 1/3 cup cold water and add to the first mixture.
  3. Add alternately to the mixture the sifted flour, cold water, and vanilla.
  4. Fold in the 3 egg whites, beaten stiff with 3/4 cup sugar added.
  5. Gradually add the remaining cake mixture.
  6. Add last the soda, mixed in 1 tablespoon boiling water.
  7. Bake in loaf or layer pans in a 350°F oven until done.
