- Cream together the butter or shortening, sugar, and salt.
- Blend 1/2 cup cocoa into 1/3 cup cold water and add to the first mixture.
- Add alternately to the mixture the sifted flour, cold water, and vanilla.
- Fold in the 3 egg whites, beaten stiff with 3/4 cup sugar added.
- Gradually add the remaining cake mixture.
- Add last the soda, mixed in 1 tablespoon boiling water.
- Bake in loaf or layer pans in a 350°F oven until done.
