Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup melted shortening or olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix flour, melted shortening or olive oil, vanilla, and sour cream until well combined.
  3. Add yeast to the flour mixture and mix thoroughly.
  4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to allow it to cool and rise.
  5. After chilling, the dough will rise and be ready for shaping.
  6. Take out half of the dough.
  7. Roll the dough out flat on a floured surface and sprinkle with sugar.
  8. Repeat the rolling and sprinkling process two more times to create layers.
  9. Cut the flattened dough in half, then into strips, and twist each strip.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
