Ingredients

  • 1 cup long grain rice
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 quarts milk
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cook rice in water until all water is absorbed.
  2. Add milk, butter, sugar, and vanilla to the cooked rice.
  3. Cook slowly in a heavy pot for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring often.
  4. During the last 15 minutes, add raisins if using.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  6. Cool before serving.
  7. Top with cinnamon and/or nutmeg if desired.
