Tips & Substitutions

For a flakier crust, make sure your shortening and butter are cold when mixing with the flour. You can substitute the shortening with butter for a richer flavor, or use coconut oil for a dairy-free option. If you prefer a sweeter filling, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of nutmeg to the apples. This recipe pairs beautifully with Caramel Penuche.

Serving Suggestions

Serve apple pie squares warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence. They also pair nicely with a cup of coffee or tea for a delightful afternoon treat. For a complete meal, consider serving alongside Randy'S Cornbread for a cozy, comforting experience.

Storage & Reheating

Store leftover apple pie squares in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place squares in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through. You can also microwave individual servings for about 30 seconds, but the crust may lose its crispness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of apple for this recipe?

Absolutely! While tart apples like Granny Smith are recommended for their balance of sweetness and tartness, you can use any variety you prefer. For a sweeter filling, consider using Honeycrisp or Fuji apples. Just be sure to adjust the sugar accordingly based on the sweetness of the apples you choose.

How can I make this recipe vegan?

To make vegan apple pie squares, substitute the shortening and butter with coconut oil or a vegan butter alternative. Use flax eggs (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water) instead of egg yolks. Additionally, ensure the corn flakes you use are vegan-friendly, and consider omitting the whipped egg whites or using aquafaba as a replacement.

What can I serve with apple pie squares?

Apple pie squares are delicious on their own but can be elevated with a few simple additions. Pair them with vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for a classic touch. For a more decadent option, serve with a side of whipped cream or a scoop of cinnamon ice cream for a warm, comforting dessert.
