- Drain pineapple; reserve 3/4 cup of the liquid.
- Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a heavy saucepan; add the reserved pineapple juice.
- Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice.
- Layer sliced tart apples, pineapple chunks, and grated processed cheese spread in a buttered 2-quart casserole dish. Pour the sauce over the layers before adding the last layer of crumbs and cheese.
- Sprinkle broken dry bread crumbs and grated cheese on top.
- Cover and bake in a 350°F oven for about 1 hour, or until the apple slices are tender.
