Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Combine dry yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1 teaspoon sugar; let rise until it makes 1 cup.
  2. In a large bowl, mix 1 cup hot water, shortening, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, and flour.
  3. Cool the mixture to lukewarm.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and enough flour to make a stiff dough.
  5. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  6. Knead until elastic, about 10 minutes.
  7. Place in a greased bowl and let rise until doubled in bulk.
  8. Punch down the dough.
  9. Shape into rolls.
  10. Let the rolls rise again, then bake at 350°F.
