- Combine dry yeast, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1 teaspoon sugar; let rise until it makes 1 cup.
- In a large bowl, mix 1 cup hot water, shortening, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, and flour.
- Cool the mixture to lukewarm.
- Add the yeast mixture and enough flour to make a stiff dough.
- Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
- Knead until elastic, about 10 minutes.
- Place in a greased bowl and let rise until doubled in bulk.
- Punch down the dough.
- Shape into rolls.
- Let the rolls rise again, then bake at 350°F.
