- Scald the milk and dissolve the shortening in it.
- Strain the mashed potatoes through a sieve into the milk mixture; let cool.
- In a large bowl, beat the egg and add the sugar, salt, and the milk mixture.
- Dissolve the dry yeast in 1/2 cup hot water and add it to the mixture.
- Add 1 cup of sifted flour at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Rub the top of the bread and sides of the bowl with shortening and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about one hour.
- Punch down the dough and shape half of it into 36 small balls.
- Place 3 balls into each cup of a 12-cup muffin tin.
- Let the dough rise again for about an hour.
- Bake in a 375°F (190°C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
