Baked Turnips

Tender baked turnips enriched with cheese and seasoned with milk, margarine, salt, and sugar, topped with toasted bread crumbs for a comforting side dish suitable for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium turnips
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon margarine
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • bread crumbs, toasted
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the turnips thin.
  2. Cook in a little salted water until barely tender, then drain.
  3. Mash the turnips.
  4. Add milk, margarine, salt, and sugar to the mash.
  5. Put the mixture into a greased casserole dish.
  6. Sprinkle toasted bread crumbs and shredded Cheddar cheese on top.
  7. Bake in a 375°F oven for about 5 minutes or until the cheese melts.
