Ingredients

  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups plain flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

Instructions

  1. Cream the margarine, sugar, and shortening until smooth and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Alternate adding milk and sifted flour, beginning and ending with the flour.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Fold in baking powder last to combine thoroughly.
  6. Grease and lightly flour 9-inch layer cake pans.
  7. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow cakes to cool before frosting and assembling.
