Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 lb beef stew meat
  • salad oil
  • 1 package brown gravy mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 (4 oz) can sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • salt
  • pepper

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef stew meat in salad oil.
  2. Drain the beef.
  3. Stir in the brown gravy mix, water, sliced mushrooms (if using), salt, and pepper.
  4. Cover and simmer for 1 hour or until the meat is tender.
  5. Prepare instant mashed potatoes as directed.
  6. Stir nutmeg and grated Cheddar cheese into the mashed potatoes.
  7. Pour the beef mixture into a 9 x 9-inch casserole dish or baking pan.
  8. Spread the potato mixture evenly over the beef.
  9. Sprinkle with paprika if desired.
  10. Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes before serving.
