Ingredients
- 1/2 cup strawberry or red pepper jelly ⓘ
- 1/4 cup orange juice ⓘ
- 2 pints strawberries ⓘ
- 3 cups all purpose flour ⓘ
- 5 tablespoons sugar ⓘ
- 2 tablespoons baking powder ⓘ
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar ⓘ
- 1 1/2 teaspoons grated orange peel ⓘ
- 3/4 cup butter ⓘ
- 1 cup milk ⓘ

- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
- Combine jelly and orange juice in a saucepan and heat until jelly melts.
- Cool the mixture. Wash strawberries and slice them.
- Pour the jelly mixture over sliced berries and refrigerate.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, and grated orange peel.
- Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add milk and stir to form a soft dough.
- Turn the dough onto a buttered baking sheet and shape into an 8 or 9-inch round.
- Pat the top to smooth it out.
- Brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar, cardamom, and pecans.
- Bake in a 400°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Cool to room temperature.
- Split the shortcake in half and spoon berries over the bottom half.
- Replace the top and ladle remaining berries over the top.
- Serve with whipped cream.
