- Mix sugar and shortening; add eggs one at a time.
- Beat well. Put baking soda into buttermilk and stir.
- Add this to sugar mixture.
- Sift flour and cocoa together and add this together, mixing well.
- Put in boiling water and vanilla last.
- Bake in a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan and cook at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes.
- Put your favorite chocolate icing on top.
