- To make sour milk, mix about 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar with 1 tablespoon of milk and let stand until curdled.

- Alternately add flour and mashed bananas to the batter, beginning and ending with flour.
- Dissolve soda in a little tepid water and add to the sour milk mixture.
- Mix the soda and sour milk into the batter until just combined.
- Stir in vanilla extract and chopped nuts.
- Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.
- Bake very slowly at 250°F (120°C) for 1 hour and 25 minutes.
- Brown the top for an additional 10 minutes if needed.
