Golden, crispy breadsticks with a soft interior, infused with buttery flavor and topped with coarse salt or Parmesan cheese, perfect as an appetizer or snack for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1 package quick rise yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°F)
  • 3 to 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • coarse salt
  • Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, heat milk, sugar, salt, and butter.
  2. Cool to lukewarm.
  3. Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  4. Combine milk mixture, yeast, and 1 1/2 cups flour; beat until smooth.
  5. Add enough remaining flour to form stiff dough.
  6. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  7. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  9. Punch dough down.
  10. Pinch off golf ball-sized pieces.
  11. Roll into pencil-sized strips.
  12. Place on a greased baking sheet 1 inch apart. Cover and let rise for 15 minutes.
  13. Combine egg white and water; brush over sticks.
  14. Sprinkle with coarse salt or Parmesan cheese.
  15. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes.
