  • 2 packets Certo
  • paraffin wax

Tips & Substitutions

For a smoother texture, you can blend the applesauce before incorporating it with the sugar. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the sugar to 6 cups or use a sugar substitute. Adding a touch of nutmeg can enhance the flavor profile. Ensure that your jars are sterilized to prolong shelf life. This recipe can also be adapted for vegan recipes by using plant-based ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use store-bought applesauce for this recipe?

Yes, using store-bought unsweetened applesauce is a convenient option. Just ensure it has no added sugars or flavors to maintain the integrity of the apple butter. Homemade applesauce can also provide a fresher taste and texture.

How can I tell when the apple butter is done cooking?

The apple butter is ready when it thickens and reaches a full rolling boil for at least one minute. You can also test its consistency by placing a spoonful on a plate; if it holds its shape and does not run, it’s perfect for bottling.

Is it necessary to use paraffin wax for sealing?

While paraffin wax can help seal the jars and extend shelf life, it’s not mandatory. If you prefer, you can simply use lids with a vacuum seal. Just make sure to refrigerate opened jars to keep the apple butter fresh.
