Ingredients

  • 4 to 5 medium apples
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sour milk

Instructions

  1. Place 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in a measuring cup.
  2. Add enough milk to equal 1 cup and let stand for 5 minutes to make sour milk.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Prepare the crust by mixing 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar, and 1/2 cup of sugar.
  5. Cut in 1 cup of butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Add the sour milk and 1 egg to the mixture and stir until combined.
  7. Roll out the dough and fit into a pie dish.
  8. Peel, core, and slice 4 to 5 medium apples.
  9. Arrange apple slices in the crust in a circular pattern to resemble a nest.
  10. Bake for 30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and apples are tender.
