- Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl.
- Add the shortening and cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add milk, stirring until a very soft, tacky dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
- Pat or roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut into biscuits with a floured cutter or glass.
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and brush the tops with butter or margarine as needed.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) until golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
