Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsifted flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • about 1 cup milk
  • butter or margarine

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the shortening and cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add milk, stirring until a very soft, tacky dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
  5. Pat or roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Cut into biscuits with a floured cutter or glass.
  7. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and brush the tops with butter or margarine as needed.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) until golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
