Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 2/3 cups sugar
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease and flour a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan or two 9-inch or 8-inch pans.
  3. Measure all ingredients into a large mixer bowl.
  4. Blend on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl constantly.
  5. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan(s).
  7. Bake in the oblong pan for about 45 minutes, or in round pans for 30 to 35 minutes, until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool before serving.
